Summary
Over the years, Dog has become mean like Thomas; he continues to stare up at Rose's window. John wants give James responsibilities on the estate, but he's sick and sullen, and the old man thinks they're both soft.
Rose forgets to knock and sees Elizabeth has three scars along her side; when Rose runs outside to catch her breath, Dog accosts her; James catches them and runs to his father, while Rose slaps Dog. John gives Thomas a tongue-lashing; Thomas gives Dog worse. James visits the grave of his older brother John (cf. the Proudstars); Dog attacks the tattler and kills his beloved dog, Callie.
John is fed up and has Thomas tossed off the property; the old man says he told him so; Thomas vows vengeance and doesn't even beat his son. Together, they get guns, go back that night, knock Kenneth's brains out, and force Rose to show them to the master's bedroom. Thomas wants Elizabeth and money; John catches them and catches a mouthful of rifle butt. James enters just as Thomas shoots John in the head; he screams over his father's body, and Dog tries to shoot him, but Rose slaps the gun aside. James slaps Dog and runs at Thomas, who slaps him away but then realizes he's bleeding: James had nubs of claws in his hands and is evidently destined to be Wolverine.
