Chasing Ghosts
Summary
Note: this is part of the House of M cross-over.
SHIELD Mobile HQ: Shaw sees video of Logan talking to Mystique and then jumping overboard (House of M 3); nobody knows what they said. Shaw has Mystique report to him and interrogates her, not about that but about Mexico:
They were sent to retrieve Paula D'Onofrio, assistant press secretary to the House of M who was kidnapped by the human guerillas not associated with the Human Resistance, but just out for some ransom. Mystique disguised herself as plant life, and she and Logan quickly and viciously killed all the guerillas. Two hours later at the Four Seasons in Mexico City, she was transforming herself, trying the dress styles of Dolce & Gabbana, and then Van Dyne. He was mixing drugs with his alcohol.
Mystique says there's a rage in Logan, which Shaw's used to advantage; Shaw agrees and says he'd do it again for the sake of mutantkind. Mystique says the war is over, but Shaw says the events in Mexico prove otherwise. Mystique says Logan is a substance abuser, but it never affected his performance, and in Mexico they were just caught off-guard.
Magnus had gifted Mexico with a Sentinel and threw a party to celebrate. Logan and Mystique were added to the security detail, but it was really more of a night off. Logan placed himself by the bar, while most of the guests tried to get introduced to Devin Price, Magnus's Foreign Relations Minister.
Logan sniffed something wrong, just as a waiter dropped a tray of wine glasses on his head, but it wasn't wine but corrosive acid, and his face burst into flame. The rebels disguised as waiters pulled knives and ganged up on him; another found Price hiding under a table, but it was really Mystique, and she stabbed him in the eye. Then the Marines arrived and machine-gunned the place; the battle was over in thirty minutes, with only ten dignitaries killed and Price unharmed.
Turns out the real target was the Sentinel, stolen; the rebels inside were probably never told the real plan.
Shaw is suspicious and asks if Logan ever talked about his past; she says not often. He has her look at a photo, and she identifies the ring-leader of the attack, but Shaw means the other man in the corner: Logan. Mystique slams his desk, insisting Logan had nothing to do with the attack: it was Nick Fury.
