Heir Aid

Summary

In lowtown Madripoor, a gang war was about to break out between Mr. Morrow's clan and Piggot's clan for control of the Wharfside. To collect an old debt, he hires Logan to come and babysit his son, Gabriel. Logan was a bit surprised to see that this was why he was being called over. Morrow explains that Piggod doesn't have a family, so he'd do anything to ruin Morrow's own. Morrow and his men leave, leaving Logan, Morrow's two servants Rebecca and Dawn, and Morrow's son Gabriel.

Later on that night, Logan puts Gabriel to bed. Gabriel can't sleep, and asks for a story. Logan tells him of this story that takes place in Canada about a young boy who was cast out to die by his people for being small and weak. Roaming through the wilderness, he encounters a pack of wolverines. Expecting them to kill him since it was the time of season when the Wolverines needed food, they instead befriends him, and adopts him as one of their own. As the boy grew, he learned the ways of the wolverines. Life was good until the men came, coming to trap wild animals for their fur. The men caught the boy, planning to reintegrate him back into society, but the boy's friends, the wolverines, wouldn't give him up without a fight, and helps the boy break free.

The story ends there. Logan senses someone in the house...someone who wasn't supposed to be there. He tells the boy to stay in the room and be quiet. He tells Morrow's servants to stay in their room. Logan finds a room with an armed intruder. He kills him. He hears a cry from the boy and returns to the room, discovering two of Piggot's men trying to kidnap him. Logan finishes them both off. Morrow returns, but brings the fight with him to his mansion. Logan joins in the fight on Morrow's side since he was thinking of the two women and the kid if Morrow had died. Morrow was about to be killed, and Logan was too far away to get to him in time. Gabriel leaps into action, pushing a dining cart into Piggot, who was advancing upon Morrow with a sharp rapier. One of Piggot's brutes tries to advance in on Gabriel, but Logan kils him. The fight pretty much ends there in a stalemate, with Piggot and his men leaving. The police comes, files a report, but makes no arrests. And Morrow and his son were okay.
