Summary
As part of the Onslaught storyline, we see Wolverine questioning Gateway for hints on how to defeat Onslaught. Gateway shows him an image of the past, back in Tokyo, when Wolverine's bride-to-be, Mariko, had been stabbed, and was asking Logan to finish her off. Being one of Logan's worst moment in his life, Logan couldn't bear to watch. He looses his footing on the roof, only to be saved by Elektra.
Elektra next goes up onto the roof, asking him to help Logan "...in his hour of need." Gateway next shows her images that she had wished to be left forgotten. Elektra realizes then that somewhere in their worst moments lies the answer to Onslaught.
Gateway then takes both Logan and Elektra into the Astral Plane, to the moment when the adamantium bonded to Wolverine was forced out by Magneto (see X-Men #25). As Elektra and Logan view the moment where Professor X wipes out Magneto's mind with pure psionic energy, Wolverine and Elektra are phased into another level of perception, witnessing the "pure light o'Xavier's Psi Power as it slams right through the core o' Magneto's Essence."
From this perspective, Elektra and Wolverine witnessed what they believed to be a manifestation of Magneto's dark ego reach out from Magneto's Avatar and depositing something in the chest of Xavier's avatar. At this moment, Wolverine and Elektra are transported back to real time.
Logan realizes that what happened to Professor Xavier had been partially his fault. He belived that Xavier snapped at the moment Logan was nearly mortally wounded, which allowed the Magneto's manifestation to have the power to leave something dark within Xavier
