Summary
Logan has a tough time of it, pushing wheelbarrows up and down the mountain, while Rose tries to organize the camp's office. The men are brutes, especially Malone, the cook, who steals from the men's rations. Smitty, the mine boss, is tough but fair.
Malone pretends to help Logan with his wheelbarrow but then dumps it in a ditch.
Rose is worried, because Logan is uncommunicative. She thinks his brain may be trying to heal itself (or maybe he's just a guy).
Malone offers Logan a sandwich but punches him when he tries to take it. He takes a few bites and tosses it on the ground, but then pushes Logan's head in the mud when he tries to retrieve it, and threatens to kill him, till Malone tells him to stop.
Two summers later, Rose is bathing in a creek, trying to remember what the rest of the world looked like. Logan is nearby, hunting a deer with a stick. She hears him and is shocked to see what a brute he's become, but grateful for the extra food. She tries to talk to him about Alberta, but he gets angry, saying he's not that person anymore. She vents into her diary and hopes someday he'll read it.
Malone hears Logan has been hunting, accuses him of stealing food, and attacks him. Logan, afraid to fight back, is rescued by Smitty and then runs away. He is cornered by wolves and finally releases his claws but then falls on the ground. The lead wolf sniffs him and howls.
