Summary

Logan runs with the wolves and takes down a deer for them to feed on, while Rose reads Blake with Smitty. He was a sailor and has eyes for Rose and a job for Logan: handling the dynamite. He takes him to the mine to demonstrate; they run for their lives before the 1 minute fuse runs out and then have a good laugh about it.

Fred and Bert play cards with Cookie but then decide he's a bum and Logan is a good guy: relentless, like a wolverine. Logan fits right in with the miners, but he sometimes goes off for days, and Rose knows he's letting his feral side out. Cookie, jealous of his popularity, cuts the fuse on the dynamite, to sabotage him.

On a dark and stormy night, there's a cave-in. Smitty comes running, and the men are able to dig out five corpses, but Logan's missing. Smitty doesn't want to give up, and they hear an animal under a wheelbarrow: turns out to be Logan, curled around the Fowler boy to protect him. Smitty knows something's strange, and that Logan should be dead, but he doesn't ask questions. He sees strength in him and gives him a book on samurai which he got in Nagasaki.

Logan finds Cookie rummaging through the dead men's belongings, knocks the tar out of him, and tells him never to come back. Then he finds Rose kissing Smitty and runs into the woods. There he finds an angry wolf, which he beats into submission.

In Alberta, old man Howlett has death-bed regrets and sends Dog to find his grandson. Dog is now a large blond man with claw scars on his face.
