Summary

  Scott, living privately in Anchorage, decides he must help his fellow mutants in the face of rising hostility toward them. Madelyne, meanwhile, is jealous of Scott's dead love, Jean.

  Hank and Bobby, with Warren in his home in the Rockies, are in process of breaking up the Defenders. After a call from Mr. Fantastic, Warren flies to New York and sees that Jean is alive. He calls Scott, who abandons Madelyne and reunites with Jean but fails to tell her about his new family.

  It is explained that Jean had been placed in a capsule at the bottom of Jamaica Bay by Phoenix, who impersonated her.

  Jean and Warren decide to form a new mutant team, since Magneto now leads the X-Men. They recall Hank and Bobby, while Scott sulks on the beach.

  Hodge is introduced as the PR representative for X-Factor. The group will pose as mutant hunters for hire, while actually protecting the mutants they catch.

  Rusty, a sailor in port in San Diego, goes to a strip club with Fisher, is kissed by and accidentally burns Emma, and is arrested. Threatened by Fisher, he breaks out of prison. Fisher calls on X-Factor, who take the boy in.
