Fatal Attractions

Summary

  As part of the ongoing Fatal Attractions X-Universe crossover, Logan had just lost his adamantium at the hands of Magneto in X-Men #25. Onboard the Blackbird are Rogue, Jean Grey, Bishop, Quicksilver, Gambit, Professor X, and a very injured, near-death Wolverine. Currently, the Blackbird is escaping from Avalon and is hurling itself towards Earth at speeds and heat that the Blackbird cannot handle. To help Wolverine, Professor X and Jean enters Wolverine's subconscious to relieve some of Logan's psychic trauma. Inside, Jean and the Professor are wit nesses to many things about Wolverine: his known past, when he was being de-adamantiumnized by Magneto, as well as some things that not even Logan had told the X-Men about (i.e. during the Weapon X project when he was being used as a test subject). Jean felt this violated Wolverine's privacy, and both exit his mind, only to encounter trouble on the Blackbird itself as it enters the Earth's atmosphere which causes hull stress on the Blackbird that it was not designed for.

  As it plummages through the Earth's atmosphere, the medi-unit that Logan was on is snapped loose, and it bangs against the side of the jet, which awakens Wolverine. Professor X was about to give Wolverine a sedative, but Wolverine insists on not wanting any. Still, they were able to see that his healing factor was overloaded, and wounds that were healing were breaking open again. They obtain the help of Moira via radio, who tries to talk them through helping to stabilize Wolverine's vital signs.

  With Jean extremely busy trying to hold the Blackbird together, Professor X is forced to reenter Wolverine's mind to flatten out brain-wave spikes that were proving to be dangerous to Wolverine. Inside, Professor X witnesses Wolverine's inner struggles, with himself and with Magneto. Professor X finds Wolverine, who was trying to "enter the light". Professor X tries to pull him back, even though Logan knew the light did mean death for him.

  In the meantime, the Blackbird was still hurling through the atmosphere, falling apart at the seams as it continues its descent. Back in Logan's subconscious, Professor X loses his grip and Logan is hurled into the light, where he encounters Illyana (Colossus' sister, aka Magik when she was still alive). Wolverine says he was ready to join her, but Illyana pushes him away.

  At the time Professor X had lost his grip on Logan, he returns back to the physical world. The cabin to the Blackbird had depressurized, and a door was blown open. Jean is sucked out, and she clings onto the edge of the doorway in a last-minute attempt from being sucked out. The Blackbird was going down, and all the X-Men were busy in one hectic way or another just trying to keep the ship together in one piece. Within his mind, Logan hears Jean calling for him, and he calls to her to help. He reaches out and grabs a hold of Jean's hand. Jean was shocked that Logan wasn't dead yet because his vital signs had flattened out. Jean thought he came back just for her, but Logan says it was the other way around.

  Much later, Logan had somewhat healed from his injuries. During an X-Men workout session, Wolverine insists on being let in because he wants to prove that he's still a part of the team, even though all the other X-Men insists he'll always be a part of the team. The X-men finally gives in, and puts him through a battle against two battle droids. What the X-Men saw was something they had never seen in Wolverine: fear. The X-men wants to stop the simulation for his sake, but Professor X says that Logan has to know this for himself and has to experience it. Wolverine is knocked to the wall by one of the droids. Professor X asks Logan if he wants the simulation stopped. Wolverine says no. Just then, he pops his claws. To the horror of the X-men, they were bone, and he was also bleeding as a result. They quickly ended the simulation to tend to Wolverine.

  Much later, Jubilee and Wolverine are outside. Jubilee talks about how she's been able to work on controlling her powers more better. Logan is still wondering why he can't remember his claws being bone, and how he thought the claws were always a byproduct of the adamantium bonding process.

  That night, Logan leaves a letter to Jubilee, as well as one to the rest of the X-Men. He feels that he's not the best at what he does anymore, and therefore, he can't be a part of the X-Men, and have decided to leave the X-Mansion to be on his own
