A Second Farewell

Summary

Wolverine is in his crazed state, just escaped from the Weapon X program and ready to kill anything and hoping to be killed. Heather tells Kevin to stay still and just keep looking him in the eyes; he growls and leaps. They fight; Wolverine stabs Heather's arm, slices Kevin in two, and then continues sparring with Heather, who, in her beast form, is a match for him. She steps on him; he stabs her leg; she grabs and tosses him, and then grabs Kevin and runs away with him. She leaps across a canyon, losing their pursuer.

Kevin's molecules are flexible and able to fuse back together in a few hours. Heather is bleeding from an artery and instructs him to form his hands into surgical clamps and stitch her up with some roots, till her healing factor fixes it.

She tells him to fly away, but he refuses to leave her. She says she can kill Wolverine if she has to; she has before. She mentions Kevin is odorless and asks if his Wolverine ever mentioned that; when Kevin confirms it, Heather knocks him out and covers him with leaves, so this Wolverine can't find him.

Heather remembers her past: gene-splicing research scientist, involved in an accident with gamma rays, and so Sasquatch was created. She joined Alpha Flight, and her first task was Project Lazarus: rehabilitating the wild man found in the woods. It took a month for him to regain his humanity, but then Wolverine became a team member and her lover and then husband. Two years later, a surviving Weapon X program controller activated a chip in his adrenal gland; he went mad, Heather had to kill him. James comforted and married her, but she still is haunted by her first love.

Wolverine finds Heather again; she looks at him sadly, and the human part of him senses something and just looks back. She reverts to human form, and they embrace; just then, Heather is ported away, glad for that last moment of calm, because she doesn't know what she would have done if he attacked.
