The Sound of the Arena

Summary

Cable loves to swim, to get away from himself and just be Nathan Summers. He dives from a rocky peak and swims with cetaceans.

A knock at the door wakes him; he's been dreaming, and his TK has swirled everything in the hotel room. He apologizes to the manager and leaves.

He's in Rio and plans to sleep on the beach; he worries about his powers being out of control. He sees boys playing soccer; one, Xande, jumps unnaturally high, using his "Dom" or gift, and the others get angry: he promised not to. They oust him from the game, so he telekinetically pops the ball, and they start to beat him up.

Cable pushes them back with TK and rescues the junior Evil Mutant, who says he's not the only mutant soccer player. He's more interested in the arena, anyway, and Cable, suspicious, goes there with him.

It's teenage mutant blood sport: Cable watches from the crowd as Jararaca explodes Piranha's head and then intervenes, levitating down to the ring. Jararaca's unrepentant, seeing this as her ticket out of poverty; Cable decides to shut down her brain's access to her powers, but his own power overloads, totally wiping the minds of all nearby.

The crowd mobs him, and he doesn't dare use his powers. Xande walks away, unimpressed.

Later, Cable finds the ocean again, wishing he could just be Nathan.

Note: following is a chapter of Jay Leno and Spider-Man.
